Celebrating Baby Boomers at the Heart of the Family

Okay, so August 17 came and went—but hey, it’s never too late to give a shoutout to a generation that’s still rocking it. Baby Boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) aren’t just a part of history—they’re still making it. From shaping our families to influencing pop culture and showing us how to age with style, Boomers have done (and are still doing) a lot. So today, we’re taking a moment to say: thank you. You matter.

Let’s be real. In so many families, Boomers are the glue. They’re the grandparents cheering from the sidelines at soccer games, the parents still offering advice to grown kids, and often the caregivers helping out with even older parents. They don’t stop—they just keep showing up.

Think back to the pandemic. Remember who stepped in to help with grocery runs, babysitting, and tech troubleshooting? Boomers. They adapted to Zoom, masked up, and made sure everyone else was okay. That quiet strength? It’s something to admire.

Culture Shapers, Big Time

You don’t have to look far to see the cultural stamp Baby Boomers have left. Think Steve Martin (born 1945), whose sharp wit and comedy have entertained audiences for decades. Or Julie Andrews (born 1935, just a bit before the Boomer range), whose timeless performances in films like "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" continue to warm hearts across generations.

Then there’s Bruce Springsteen (born 1949), whose songs tell stories we all relate to. And Paul McCartney (okay, he was born just before the Boomer wave in 1942), but come on—The Beatles? Enough said.

These icons didn’t just entertain us. They helped shape how we see the world. And they brought families together around TV screens, radios, and concert halls.

Redefining Retirement (And Looking Good Doing It)

Today’s Boomers are not sitting quietly on rocking chairs. Nope. They’re running marathons, starting side hustles, traveling the world, and honestly, just living their best lives.

Take Martha Stewart (born 1941). At 81, she was on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Yes, really. She’s still doing her thing—stylish, sharp, and setting the bar high.

Or Samuel L. Jackson (born 1948), who keeps starring in major films and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Boomers are proving every day that age is just a number.

Giving Back Without the Spotlight

A story about giving back without the spotlight is the one of Susan Helseth Roberson, a retired educator in Vero Beach who taught at Rosewood Elementary for decades. She was the kind of teacher whose laughter and warm smile lit up classrooms and hallways alike.

Her students and colleagues remember her as the "center of our universe"—always upbeat, always caring.  Even after retirement, Susan stayed involved in her community through her church and the Indian River County Historical Society.

Although she passed away in 2018, the kindness she poured into her students and community continues to resonate. Her legacy is a beautiful reminder that everyday contributions—like being a nurturing mentor or guiding a child toward confidence—really matter.

Yes, They Use Tech Too!

Sure, Boomers grew up with rotary phones and handwritten letters, but a lot of them have gone digital. They’re on Facebook, FaceTime, and even learning TikTok dances (with help from the grandkids, of course).

Take Jane, 68, who runs a YouTube channel sharing her favorite recipes and family stories. Or Bob, a retired engineer who sells handmade wooden toys on Etsy. They’re showing the world that learning doesn’t stop at any age.

Celebrating the Everyday Boomer

It’s great to cheer for the celebrities, but let’s not forget the everyday heroes. The neighbor who always checks in. The retired nurse who volunteers at the local clinic. The grandparent who never misses a birthday or school play.

These are the people who make life better just by being there. And honestly, that deserves just as much applause.

One Big Thank You

So here’s to the generation that’s still going strong. Baby Boomers have given us music, memories, mentorship, and more. Whether they’re family, friends, coworkers, or neighbors, they’ve helped shape the world we live in today.

Let’s keep celebrating our baby boomers, not just on one day—but all year long.
